This funky family session at Point State Park in Pittsburgh brought a creative twist to classic family photos with a vintage couch as the centerpiece.
Megan – who I’ve had the honor of photographing before – had mentioned that she didn’t want something traditional for her family session. After asking if I had any props or ideas I could bring, she instantly said “what about bringing a couch to the park?” HARD YES!!
There’s something unexpectedly perfect about placing a couch in the middle of a park and this was one of those sessions that I truly would love to do again but with a different spin. I wish I had photos of us (Eric) wheeling this through the park because it was an insane sight to be seen. As we were walking, a man stopped to take a photo of us and said “you don’t see that every day!” You would be correct sir.

It was time to ditch the couch and run around a little bit because I could tell Harper was getting antsy. One thing I’ve learned while photographing children is to let them be children. Often times I find myself trying too hard to pose little kids only to remember that they just want to run around and have fun – and that’s half the joy in getting family photos taken.
Sessions like this are a reminder that family photos don’t have to fit into a box. Let your hair get messy from the wind, laugh until tears roll down your cheeks, run around and have fun!

Bringing a vintage couch to Point State Park allowed Megan, Eric and Harper ]shine in a way that felt natural, playful, and completely their own. It’s these unexpected moments and creative choices that turn a session into something truly memorable.
Props such as backdrop, couches and chairs are always available to add on to a session!
