ESSENTIAL ITEMS | THE PERFECT WEDDING FLAT LAYS

Apr 23, 2025

We’re all a fan of the detail flay lay shots that come along with the wedding day. The pin that your grandmother wore when she got married, a handkerchief made from your mother’s wedding gown – they all have a story behind them and I love when my clients include these mementos for the photos.

This is also one of my FAVORITE parts of the day and my couples ask me all the time “what should I include for the detail shots?!” I figured this is the best time to write a blog post so you’re the most prepared when your photographer arrives.

First things first, the biggest tip for your detail shots is to have everything and anything you want photographed in a box ready to go! I recommend packing this up the night before either in a shoe box, or a bag so you (or because you delegate on your day – a bridal party member) can hand it right off to the photographer!

Here’s a list of all the items that make for a really great flat lay –

  • Rings – both you and your partners rings
  • Ring Box – there are some really cute ones on Etsy!
  • Dress Hanger – if you don’t remember one, worry not – I keep a spare wooden one in my car!
  • Jewelry – think earrings, bracelet, necklaces
  • Watch / cufflinks / ties – this is more for the gentlemen of the day
  • Invitation Suite – your save the dates, invitation suites, etc. I recommend keeping these in a plastic bag to stay clean!
  • Perfume/Cologne
  • Shoes
  • Veil
  • Vow books or notes
  • Loose petals from your florist – this is not always a given, so be sure to ask! These will always enhance your lay flat in my opinion

I also make sure to capture your dress in a way that is flattering to the dress itself. Some dresses don’t always hang the best – especially if they are strapless

There’s something poetic about ending detail shots at night – the polished rings surrounded by empty beer cans and half-eaten cake. It’s messy, real, and I love capturing that contrast. There is no rhyme or reason to making these stand out. I grab items from the day whether it’s your champagne flutes or Polaroids that you and your partner took and I put them with some candles for that night-time ambiance.
